PHPR
Sector: PR,  Number of Staff :2
About the company
Penny Haywood runs PHPR, a PR agency that specialises in promoting 'the difficult to explain' - usually technical, financial or IT sectors. PHPR has worked with all sizes of organisations in the public and private sector, so they can provide flexible services to suit most budgets, including teaching you to do your own PR. Penny also wrote the business book best seller, DIY PR, the small business owner's guide to 'free' publicity - Batsford 1998 - now out of print
 How my business benefited
"PR is a hard business to expand because everyone wants to deal with the key people at the top and at PHPR, that's me! So it's key that I delegate as much of the non client-facing tasks as I can. And People Per Hour is proving a big help with that because it's such a flexible resource. We have a number of associates and preferred suppliers we use to create teams and handle bigger projects, and People Per Hour has accelerated that process for us. It is perfect for trying out new people without the hassle if it doesn't work out.
And everyone we've used to date has exceeded expectations.
We found Megan, who's now a regular team player handling our client's media monitoring reports.
I also use Nadine, a VA from PPH, to regularly drag my timelogs out of me and type them up.
But there's a lot of smaller jobs, both personal and professional, that collectively build up and become a hassle. You end up tackling them well after midnight when they've become urgent. Then you're half wrecked the following day. But PPH are taking these off my hands as well, and doing them better than I could because other people bring focus to the specific project plus really useful relevant experience. For example, I posted a project to contact all the care homes in our area to set me up with appointments to visit, so I could find a good home for my mother in law. I chose Lyn as she is a former PA to a care home director. She gave me a brilliant checklist that flagged up all sorts of issues I hadn't thought of. That really helped me sort out the services on offer. When she sent me my appointment schedule she also attached the official Care Commission's inspection reports on each of the homes I was to visit. From knowing very little about care homes, she put me into a pretty knowledgeable position. The cost was just £60, but the peace of mind it bought was priceless. My mother in law looks happier than I've seen her look in years."

About the company
Pubnclubsupermarket.com is a an auction site for the licensed trade in the UK: pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels.
 How my business benefited
"I have used People Per Hour several times over the past few months and intend to use them even more in the future. As a small business my biggest cost is wages and I need to keep these under very tight control. I need to pay for projects etc when they have been completed, What I don't need is to pay somebody for chatting about how good a weekend they had !! I have not always agreed terms with the potential bidders for my projects however this seems to be no problem. I like the flexibility and the broad range of quotes for any particular project from the extremely expensive to the very cheap. The trick is to discuss the project with your bidders to ensure they know exactly your requirements , there are then no misunderstandings. I would whole-heartedly support People Per Hour in providing a service that is tailor-made to the small business entrepreneur."

About the company
As specialists in executive coaching and leadership development, we offer a range of business consulting services designed to help you find the questions and uncover the solutions. By combining this knowledge with your expertise, we can help facilitate positive growth for both you and your organisation.
 How my business benefited
"People Per Hour is the ideal tool to connect buyers with professionals. It offers a quick and cost-effective solution for a one-off or long term project. We are delighted with the work completed by our chosen provider and shall definitely consider using People Per Hour again for future projects."

 How we saved cost
"Based on our understanding of average rates for copywriters, we consider ourselves to have saved £140 (or 50%) on this job alone. Moreover, we'd rate our chosen provider, Sue Dunn, as well above average, so consider we were also able to access a very high quality service. I think the People per Hour system works well for the provider as well as the buyer as costs of acquiring new business and time spent in identifying quality providers is significantly reduced on both sides. In short, it's the ideal solution for time-constrained small businesses."

Are you a home worker? For how long?
Yes, I am. Have been working from home for approximately 6 months now.
When did you make that transition to home-working?
Gave up my full-time employment at end of May 2007
What did you used to do professionally before?
I was Group Finance Director for a corporate travel company – huge pressure, 70/80 hour weeks
4) What have been the major changes / differences in your work and your personal life?
Loads! On the work front, primarily no guaranteed income – causing sleepless nights, no colleague support/interaction, long quiet days when I am free to get on with my work without all the interruptions that come when working with others, but I often don't actually see or talk to anyone – so a sense of isolation. I talk more to my cat! Lots of self-motivation needed, and lots of confidence because you don't really have anyone to bounce your 'rejections' off and could easily sink into a little hole and not want to come out again! Despite all this, I do feel far less stressed, and appreciate the fact that I can work flexibly, having an afternoon off if needed but can then work in the evening etc.

On the personal front, reduced income has affected my previous spending patterns, but, then again, you don't actually need to spend as much if you're not topping up the office wardrobe etc. The sense of isolation, in my case anyway, spreads over a little into my personal life too as some of my friends were work colleagues from whom I now feel very remote and with whom I now have little in common. So I have started to appreciate more the necessity to develop a 'new' social life to get more of a work/life balance. Very, very important for this homeworker who – living alone - would otherwise become a total recluse!
Was the decision business or personal?
A mixture of both
Has your personal life improved? How?
See above. I am a lot more relaxed and calm than I was, and will have more time for friendships than previously.
How difficult was the transition? What were the key challenges faced?
It has been extremely difficult, the key challenges really being the changes detailed above, and the ongoing difficulties of establishing a new business in terms of client base. This is the most difficult thing of all.
What was the biggest benefit to your business (if any)?
Being home-based means that I can work flexibly to meet clients' deadlines and requirements, and am 'on site' if an urgent job crops us.
Would you go back to working from home?
???? I have no intentions to give up working from home, and certainly wouldn't go back to working for anyone else in a normal office environment.
What would you advise people looking to make that transition?
To be really sure that you have the sort of personality that copes with isolation. Lots of people like the idea of doing it but would struggle with the reality of the loneliness and lack of peer support.
How has Peopleperhour.com helped you since you joined?
It's been brilliant. I log on regularly to look for the latest projects and bid for all those which I know I can do well. Have now been awarded 2 projects, both giving me the opportunity to do the type of work I enjoy. I intend to keep using the site. It's way ahead of its nearest competitor, and totally user-friendly.

Are you a home worker? For how long?
Yes I am a home worker and have been so for just under 6 months.
When did you make that transition to home-working?
I started preparing for it middle of last year and made the leap at the end of September 2007.
What did you used to do professionally before?
I have been working in Graphics and Website Design since leaving university in 1997. I worked for a range of companies from being part of marketing teams for large international blue-chip companies, advertising agencies as well as small local design firms servicing the local community.
What have been the major changes / differences in your work and your personal life?
Happiness, I had a number of reasons to make the move with significant impact on both work and personal. From a work point of view I can obviously work the way I believe is right and provide the customers with the service that I believe the work deserves at a cost that I deem fair.
Was the decision business or personal?
The decision was both business and personal. To cut to the chase, from the business side I was becoming more and more disillusioned by the way companies I was working for were seeing and treating clients as nothing more than an invoice, obviously the end point has to be to make money but in the design field I believe that if you produce great design and not just value the customer but involve them in the process then everyone wins and the customers are also far more likely to repeat. From a personal point of view, my daughter was one and a half and I felt I was missing her growing up. No matter where you work you cannot see everything but the opportunity is there to be far more a part of her life.
Has your personal life improved? How?
My personal life has improved greatly, from having breakfast as a family to being able to make time for simple things like taking our daughter to feed the ducks, or taking an hour out of the week to take her to swimming lessons. I am also less stressed as being the master of my own destiny so to speak I can manage my time better which benefits my marriage and our joint happiness.
How difficult was the transition? What were the key challenges faced?
As with any transition there is worry involved. I was lucky enough to have a few clients come on board almost exactly at the time of change over but I was able to make the move as after 10 years in the business I had gradually made the right contacts which I was able to call upon or had in place to help generate initial security. The added value of sites such as people per hour are also highly beneficial. There is no obvious guarantee to get every job that you put a bid in for but there is a chance as long as you are honest, fair and realistic about the service you are offering, they also have a great rating system so service buyers get an idea about what you can offer and a good indication from past buyers to the quality of the work done.
What was the biggest benefit to your business (if any)?
The biggest benefit is the freedom to work how I want to. Over the last 10 years I gained a lot of beneficial experience but was also present to see a lot of mistakes being made. I took all these on board and bear them in mind with every job I undertake and so far the reaction from all my clients is very positive.
Would you go back to working from home?
Simply put, NO, even though I have not been doing this for that long I think my mind has been ready for this for a lot longer, I just had to wait for the right time. Saying that though if I was approached and offered a position where my talents and experience were used as a source to benefit a company I may be tempted but that has been offered before and was not the case so I would be wary.
