While it’s never been easy to combine the responsibilities of motherhood with the demands of a busy career, British working women are certainly feeling the lack of much needed flexibility in the workplace. More and more women with children are turning to self employment as a result.
As Rachael Taplin, managing director of advisory group Mums in Control says:”We are seeing a definite rise in the mumtrepreneur , as a lot of women find the flexibility they lack in the corporate world in starting their own business.”
She goes on to say how great it is that women are now beginning to realise that they don’t necessarily need thousands to set up their own business. Indeed, self employment and freelancing are positive answers to the difficulties faced by most working mothers in combining work and childcare, to the relative lack of commitment to flexible working arrangements within British business.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Enterprise Day will take place on November 19th and there will be a series of special events around the country to celebrate the success of female entrepreneurs. According to the non-profit organisation Enterprise Insight, over one million women are now self-employed and over £60 billion is contributed to the economy by successful female business owners. |
