IT a hurdle to flexible work

While councils are increasingly in favour of work flexibility as a means of reducing costs, the failure of IT to keep up with demands for working from home has prevented many companies from rolling out flexible work practices, according to a recent survey.
A Work Wise UK study has found that IT constraints are the most significant deterrent to employers looking to offer their staff flexible work conditions.
According to figures from the Trade Union Congress, almost 3.5 million, or 12.2 per cent of, Britons currently work from home (excluding the self-employed), the highest proportion of home workers yet recorded.
While 87 per cent of councils responding to the Work Wise survey said that technology had improved in relation to remote workers, it still remained an obstacle to the practice being more widely adopted.
"Flexible working is being considered much more seriously as a means to improve business performance than it was in 2006," said Marylou Lousvet, a Work Wise director.
Since the last survey, in 2006, working from home has become the most preferred flexible work option taken up by employees at councils.
