Inequality in salaries inspire more women to become freelancers
Posted by peopleperhour.com - 03/10/2008 13:33

Women in the workforce are still losing out when it comes to achieving equality in salaries. The main problem is the small number of women reaching higher positions in companies due to traditional attitudes regarding women’s traditional role in the home and the demands of childcare.

As co-founder of Everywoman Karen Gill says:”It’s absurd that men earn more than women, especially considering that more women complete university than men. The old issues of childcare and family commitment are still cited as reasons for this.”

It’s no wonder that more and more women are turning to freelancing – indeed the route of self employment and freelancing may often be the best way to break out of the “glass ceiling” and achieve senior jobs that traditionally men have done. According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission fewer females have senior jobs in media and the law than last year and females now face a concrete ceiling. Indeed there are only about five women directors for the top UK companies.

For ambitious and self driven women who refuse to be beaten by such prejudice and unfairness, there could not be a better time to become a freelancer and achieve their dreams of greater remuneration and success.
