Number of home workers set to increase

New legislation in the UK should increase the number of employees who work from home. The change in the law will allow people with children under 16 to become flexible workers – this could affect 4.5m people.
On the downside a BT survey has shown that 88% of managers have had no training to deal with staff working out of the office of helping with the IT equipment they will need. Home-working employees also feel neglected, as 22% said they lack the support to enable them to work effectively from home.
BT business’s managing director, Bill Murphy, says that technology is available to enable people to work from home, but they are prevented by other factors, such as outdated management techniques.
Most freelancers have to deal with many of these problems on their own – certainly their own IT set up. Many consider themselves mercifully free of management supervision or intervention, and enjoy their reduction in travel time and costs.
Separate research by Aastra has shown that, by working from home and avoiding the daily commute to major cities, people could save around 55 hours a year. |
