Stand up for your rights, working fathers told

Working fathers are failing to take advantage of their rights to flexible work, according to a new report.
As the government rolls out changes which will see employees with children up to the age of 16 be given the right to request flexible work, men are encouraged to take up the opportunities available to them.
A review carried out by Sainsbury's head of human resources Imelda Walsh found that fathers were three times less likely to request flexible work than were working mothers.
Ms Walsh told the Times newspaper that many fathers were not aware of what flexible work involved.
"Men should know flexible work is not always about reducing your hours. Its also about where you work, when you start and finish, and with school sometimes that can make all the difference," she said.
A report released by the Equal Opportunities Commission in January 2007 showed that men are eager to prioritise family over work. The study found that four out of five new fathers would be keen to stay home to look after their babies full time, if it were possible.
With the new law, and the courage to ask, it could soon be more possible than ever.
