Working from home is good for the environment, according claims made by a leading work organisation.
In celebrating National Work from Home Day today, Work Wise UK the not-for-profit organisation behind the day claims that people working from home not only enjoy greater flexibility, but they also lighten their carbon footprint.
"It would not take much to see a real impact," said Phil Flaxton, Work Wise UK chief executive.
"Even if staff worked only an average of one day every two weeks at home, this would result in ten per cent less people commuting and travelling. Think of the impact that would have on our roads, trains and buses."
25 million UK workers commute to work, according to figures by the RAC Foundation. Of those, 18 million are believed to drive to and from their place of employment.
Working from home, says Work Wise, could make a real long term impact on the environment.
Homeworkers from telecommunications giant BT, according to Work Wise, save up to 200 million miles in commuter travel every year by choosing to work from home.
Five million workers are expected to not show up to their offices today, giving ever more momentum to the country-wide push for more flexible working conditions.
