Project Title : Branding for SME - help thinking through the project stages

Project Location : Remote

Project Status :
Bid Accepted
Project Description
I have been a leading Executive Coach in the UK for the last ten years. I intend to now take my company through a re-naming and branding process over the next few months. My intuition and feeling about this elevation are strong, but I have neither the prior experience nor systematic clarity of mind as to how to bring the whole branding process (and the various parts of it) about.

The visible functional effect will be a new Content Management System web site, logo, stationery, marketing material and invoicing system. The emotional effect will be how I become more energised and focussed because what is emerging in my work will have been given a superior leading-edge encapsulisation within the executive coaching market.

This INITIAL project request is to help me think through and determine the overall structure and stages of the whole branding venture. Below is a list of Discrete Projects 1-12, and these are my initial thoughts as to the overall structure and stages. So I first need help seeing what the Discrete Projects actually are, so I can then put each one out to tender appropriately. You may well be able to help me on some of them as well.

I currently see the following Discrete Projects in logical order:

1. Create the brand and define the corporate concept

2. Design the logo

3. Select the domain name and create the email address (from a variety of domain names that I have already purchased and are hosted)

4. Design the web site (i.e. web concept, structure, what pages, what I want to communicate to my clients via the site etc.)

5. Decide which CMS to use (I have been recommended to use Website Baker)

6. Development of the CMS web site

7. Write the web site pages content

8. Design the stationery (business card, letterhead, compliment slip)

9. Upgrade PowerPoint presentations

10. Creatively design and write the Professional Profile for marketing

11. Design an invoicing system

12. Redecorating and refurbishing company premises.

My own mind works in a creative, ‘bursts of energy’ fashion. So for each discrete project I will then be looking for someone who can (a) work structurally and linearly, in order to bring sequence and order, but also (b) engage interactively, in order to allow creativity and accommodate changes of direction, as well as (c) confidently bring their own idea-generation to the party, without trying to force any particular view or direction. It is important to me that this branding venture takes the time and gets to the depth that is authentic to myself and the work that my company does.

Please let me know if:

1. You consider you can help me INITIALLY think through the overall structure and stages of this project (this particular project request is for this thinking through)

2. You think you can then help with any of the discrete projects 1-12 above (each of which will obviously be some way down the road but early discussions now might help).

The branding will be for a £200k p.a. one-person high-quality leading-edge small business, so experience in working with this kind of venture may be of value. The many web-based Case Studies e.g. on Coca Cola, Harley Davidson and Hertz, don’t seem to reflect my market or dilemmas! I will need you to position and justify what you think I need to be doing (not lead me through a learning experience about branding generally!). More important to me than focus and economy during this process, is that the full and authentic brand that I feel within for my company and my work manifests through this. This new company needs to reach selective high-value clientele, and is my life’s work rather than a money-making venture requiring mass appeal.

Feel free to be open and honest in how you approach bidding for this, as this will give me comfort in terms of who I might be working with and in understanding where you are coming from. Thank you very much for reading.

Proposal:
Dear Paul

I would very much like to help you with this project. I have worked on visual identity/branding issues with a variety of organisations, including a very high profile global publisher and (most recently) a new College at the University of Oxford. Having worked for a business school and particularly an executive education business, I think I probably have some insight into the needs and attitudes of your client base too.

Your approach to the project I think is a good one, although I would urge you not to bind yourself too firmly to a particular outcome (i.e. a logo) at this point. Once you have thought through the brief, which will include what you want your brand to \'say\', who your audiences are, and how you communicate with them, you may find that a different sort of design system will in fact suit your business much better. I can certainly help you think through all the things that you will need to consider in this brief.

I would also say that a number of your discrete projects can be linked together. For example, whoever is designing the identity/logo will need to test whether it \'works\' on your stationery anyway, so you might as well include the visual identity design and stationery design together. Similarly, I think that it would be practical and economical to give all the technical website projects to a single web developer.

I have overseen branding development and brand creation projects of this type before, so I can certainly advise on what I have found is the best way to approach and organise them.

My hourly rate reflects the amount of experience I have and the senior level at which I am accustomed to working. I could help you with the initial thinking-through stage and write a project plan, with timetable, as well as write a design brief, which would encapsulate your brand values, for a flat fee of £500 (I have enetered this as one day at £500)

If, after this initial project, we feel we work well together, I would be delighted to help you manage the rest of the project.

Estimated Start Date: Within 1 Week

Hi Paul,

This sounds like a great project. I find it is a wonderful opportunity when one has the chance to creatively invent/re-invent your horizon.
You must be very excited!!

I would be happy to offer my services (and the services of my company). I have given similar assitance to a number of my clients. That is what we do. :o)

I certainly could help you do most of the initial headwork and threafter ... a great number of the items on your list myself.. where my personal experties start to wane we can enlist the assitance from a network of experts.

Where are you based geographically?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Monika

thanks for your message.

i will have certainly started by then, though don\'t know where i will be in it all by then. i tend to work in creative bursts rather than by structure, hopefully though it will be well on the way. the responses on here are so varied in their even initial proposed approach.

having said that i liked your profile, so may at some point see if i could utilise your skills in critiquing what has been produced by December - a fresh pair of eyes might well be useful, even though it won\'t be the full job. Please let me know if that sounds a possibility.

another possibility might be that we have a one-hour chat on the phone next week, say Wednesday 6pm (if you are on for it please let me know your hourly rate) where you could advise me around the process that i have laid out so far and about pitfalls and things to look out for that i might find along the way. that would also be very useful to me and could in some way initiate a dialogue.

i am now away until tuesday so will reply then if i hear from you in the meantime.

thank you.

wishing you well,

Paul.

Hi Paul

Thanks for inviting me to bid for this project. The project, as you have described, sounds extremely exciting. However, I cannot start until December as I am going to be out of the country. Is the start date flexible?

Thanks
Monika

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the opportunity. I\'m actually examining the potential of moving into coaching myself, so it wouldn\'t be appropriate to bid on this occasion.

Good luck with everything.
